AUS vs ENG Day 3 Stumps: Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon put Australia in driver’s seat, hosts lead by 282 runs
After dominating the 1st session with a 138-run partnership between Root and Malan, England once again suffered a collapse soon after skipper Joe Root’s dismissal. England lost 4 wickets in the 2nd session and three in the third session as they fold up at 236 still trailing by 237 runs.
Stand-in Australian skipper Steve Smith could have enforced the follow-on, but chose to rest his bowlers and send in the openers to turn the screw with two days left. They negotiated some 75 minutes for the loss of David Warner for 13, needlessly run out after a disastrous mix-up with Marcus Harris, who remains unbeaten on 21.

Australia stormed back into the contest by taking four wickets against England in the second session on Day 3. Resuming the second session at 140/2, England was given a body blow in the 46th over as Cameron Green dismissed skipper Joe Root (62) and this brought all-rounder Ben Stokes in the middle. Root and Malan had put together 138 runs for the third wicket.
England was sent in a further slump as Malan (80) was dismissed by Mitchell Starc while Ollie Pope (5) was sent back to the pavilion by Nathan Lyon, and as a result, the visitors were reduced to 164/5 in the 57th over, still trailing by 309 runs.

Joe Root and Dawid Malan walk out to the middle to begin proceedings for England while Jhye Richardson will begin the attack for Australia
@08:48 AM – What do you reckon of the Day 3 pitch?
Adelaide Test Day 3 – What England Require? The pair of Root & Malan will need a repeat of their partnership in Brisbane if England are to dig themselves out of an almighty hole after Australia declared their first innings at 9-473.
Michael Nesser got a wicket off his second ball in Test cricket when he had Haseeb Hameed (6) caught at mid-on after Mitchell Starc had Rory Burns (4) caught in the slips off a delivery which went across the left-hander and took the shoulder of the bat.
Mitchell Starc (39 not out) and Michael Neser (35) had earlier shared a rapid half-century stand for the eighth wicket after England seemed to have contained the damage and had Australia on 390-7 at tea.
AUS vs ENG Live: What can England look forward to on Day 3?
Everything depends on how well Joe Root plays and how well Dawid Malan supports him. In the first Test, the two took England to a respectable score after the openers fell quickly. But that is where the problem starts. England’s middle and lower-middle order have had lacklustre time against India on their home solid and in Australia, they didn’t do any better. In the first Test, England lost eight wickets for just 74 runs.

If Joe Root and Dawid Malan do not put up a huge fight. England’s chances of making of putting up a respectable total will vanish rather quickly. Ben Stokes has just made his return from injury and he still needs time to get adjusted once again.
- Joe Root must shoulder on the batting responsibility
- Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler and Ollie Pope are three batsmen who must step up to help England.
- The likes of Chris Woakes and Ollie Robinson will have an additional responsibility to stretch England’s batting.
- England must survive the Twilight time when most batsmen lose focus in day-night Tests.
- With the pitch still suitable for batting, England batsmen have to take advantage of that.
