At 43, Rohan Bopanna could be World No.1 in men’s doubles – HERE’S HOW

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden have a fair chance to be World No. 1 in ATP rankings and are only 580 points away from the current top-ranked team.

Who would have ever thought that Rohan Bopanna would scale the heights he has, this late in his career? At 43, he is playing even better than he did in his prime years and is having a sensational year where he also made the final of the US Open along with his doubles partner Matthew Ebden. This is just one of his achievements from the long list, the latest being, he is on the cusp of achieving the World No. 1 ranking in the men’s doubles.

As per the Pepperstone ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, Bopanna and Ebden are third currently. They made it to the semis of the Paris Masters, which is an ATP Masters 1000 event after they went past fifth seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 6-2. This means, Paris Masters will be their third consecutive tour-level semi-final.

World No. 1 Scenarios

After the top seeds at the Paris Masters, Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek lost to Harri Heliovaara, and Mate Pavic 6-4, 6-4 on Friday, Bopanna and Ebden moved closer to the No. 1 spot. The possibility will become a reality if they actually win the title. Currently, they trail the World No. 1 team of Dodig and Krajicek by 580 points.

Meanwhile, Neil Skupski and Wesley Koolhof have an equally good chance to make it to the top of the ATP rankings, as they also made it to the semis of the Paris Masters. If it so happens Koolhof and Skupski fail to reach the final, and Rohan Bopanna and Ebden win the title, they will be the new World No. 1 team with a cushion of 60 points.
