Asian Games Opening Ceremony: Lovlina Borgohain and Harmanpreet lead Indian contingent

The opening ceremony featured several new-age cutting-edge technology. The event will also saw electronic smokeless fireworks - a first of its kind initiative.

The Asian Games officially got underway in Hangzhou, China on Saturday, 23rd September. The city hosted a dazzling opening ceremony at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre. It featured several new-age cutting-edge technology, enthralling the od 80,000 spectators as well as Asians across the globe.

What to expect at the Asian Games Opening Ceremony?

One of the highlights of any opening ceremony is the display of colourful fireworks. But the Hangzhou Games will break the tradition since the organisers have decided to go ahead with the philosophy of environmental protection. The event will however see electronic smokeless fireworks – a first-of-a-kind initiative.

The opening ceremony will also witness infusion of cutting-edge technology and cultural elements. Some of the other features that will mesmerise the spectators are Nake-eye 3D visual effects and virtual imagery.

The torch lighting ceremony is also set to witness innovation. According to reports, millions of digital torch-bearers, who have registered online, will transform into a digital human figure. It will join forces with the real torch-bearer and will collectively ignite the flame. The performances will meanwhile witness the Chinese culture. Folk songs and dances from 11 different cities in Zeizhang province will also enthrall the crowd.

Meanwhile, China President Xi Jinping will be attending the opening ceremony. Leaders from other Asian countries like Cambodia, Syria, Nepal, South Korea and Malaysia will also be present during the event.

Who will be India’s flag-bearers?

655 Indian athletes will be in action in the Asiad across 39 sports disciplines. Like the Tokyo Olympics, for the first time, to symbolise gender equality, every country will have two flag-bearers – one each from both the genders. India’s Hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain will be India;s flag-bearers in this year’s edition.
