Neeraj Chopra’s first throw not recorded due to technical failure, still wins gold comfortably

After facing a host of technical problems in the men's javelin throw final, Neeraj Chopra won gold and silver at the Asian Games.

Imagine a scenario where an athlete is all warmed up for a competition, in the zone, and then when the time finally arrives, a technical issue just delays everything. This is what happened with Neeraj Chopra during the men’s javelin final at the Asian Games. He started with a massive throw which went comfortably over 85m, but the officials, despite repeated efforts, could not record his first attempt.

Anyhow, that did not deter Neeraj Chopra from defending his title and bringing another gold medal to the country. He recorded a best effort of 88.88m to take the top prize, while Kishore Jena, with a best of 87.54m, got the silver medal. Interestingly, this is Jena’s personal best as well, which he bettered twice in the event.

Issues Galore in Asian Games Men’s Javelin Final for Neeraj Chopra & Kishore Jena

Coming back to the technical issue, after waiting for almost 10 minutes, when every participant was waiting for their turn, the competition started again. Unfortunately for Neeraj, he had to throw again, to get his first registered throw. This first attempt, for the second time, was a low 82.38m.

That was not the only issue that transpired at the event. Kishore Jena’s second throw was wrongly deemed illegal. After an immediate protest, his throw was finally recorded. Both these incidents took a bit of sheen away from the event, but a gold and a silver was enough to cheer the India fans.
