McGrath feels fine and is at home isolating with his family in line with health requirements.
He will be unable to attend the Ashes Pink Test campaign launch in honour of his late wife Jane on Monday or the opening two days of the cricket, which start on Wednesday.
McGrath is hopeful of testing negative in time for Jane McGrath Day on day three on the Test.
“Glenn has had a PCR test which unfortunately returned a positive result. We wish Glenn and his family good health,” McGrath Foundation CEO Holly Masters told the Telegraph.
“We are hopeful Glenn will remain well and return a negative result in time to attend Day 3 of the Pink Test, now known as Jane McGrath Day on 7 January.
“We are grateful to our partners at Cricket Australia and the SCG, as well as the England Cricket team and the broadcasters for their ongoing support for the Pink Test and look forward to still making this the ‘pinkest’ Ashes.”
The news of McGrath’s absence comes amid reports the England training session today was disrupted due to a lack of net bowlers after they were deemed close contacts of a positive case.

AUS ENG Sydney Test – The visiting England team has now lost 5 support staff members including the head-coach to Covid related issues.
Who will coach England team?
- Spin coach Jeetan Patel – Covid Positive
- Fast bowling coach Jon Lewis – Covid Positive
- Strength and Conditioning coach Darren Veness – Covid Positive
- Head Coach Chris Silverwood – In Isolation as family member tested positive
- Adam Hollioake – Replacement Coach also deemed to be close contact to positive case.
All five will miss the fourth Test in Sydney after being left behind in Melbourne as a result of an outbreak in the camp, with head coach Chris Silverwood one of those now in isolation with his family.
Hollioake lives on the Gold Coast and had initially been cleared to work with the team outdoors as he was a late arrival from a different state.
Such is the situation that Captain Joe Root was captured taking over some of the coaching duties on Sunday.
Australia also reeling under Travis Head’s positive case: For home team Australia, Travis Head is already out of 4th test match of the series after testing positive.
Usman Khawaja is the leading contender to replace Head. Australia has also named Josh Inglis and Mitch Marsh to the squad for Sydney.
It will be Khawaja’s 1st test after 2019 Ashes.
