‘When you take a job like this, you accept that. It is what it is. Do I believe I’m the right man? Yes I do, or I wouldn’t have taken the job in the first place. You’re under pressure constantly, aren’t you?’ he said.

Silverwood says he had a ‘very honest chat’ with the entire team. He feels that he is still the right person to lead England in the build-up of the Boxing Day Test at MCG.

He said that some ‘honest chats’ were made in the dressing room after Australia thrashed England by 275 runs at Adelaide. The support staff have convinced him of a possible turnaround after he addressed England’s issues in all three areas of the game- batting, bowling and fielding.

‘I believe I can. We have had those honest chats and I believe I have the right coaching staff around me to make that happen as well,’ Silverwood said as quoted by DailyMail.

The final decision is at the hands of England’s managing director Ashley Giles. England have lost 8 matches out of 14 games in 2021.

The win percentage has slipped 28 per cent.

Duncan Fletcher had lost his job after Ashes whitewash in 2006-07 while Andy Flower had resigned from his post after England lost 0-5 in 2013-14.

Silverwood also backed skipper Root after he came under fire for blaming the bowling department. ‘He was just truthful,’ said Silverwood.

‘There are things we can learn from a batting perspective – like the lines and lengths they left us on. They showed us how to play. We have to learn quickly. But it is not just batting and bowling. Look at how many chances we have given up in the field, with dropped catches and missed run-outs,’ he stated further.

‘Wickets off no-balls is unacceptable. I brought it up. This cannot happen – it is a basic error. The lads accepted that. We have to be better.’

Silverwood also defended the selections of the first two Tests despite England going for the all-pace attack at Adelaide.

‘Obviously, we wanted to win, but that is always going to be difficult. We have to be realistic about what we have, but we have to learn,’ he concluded.
