Leicester City RELEGATED: Leicester City have become the holders of a very unwanted record as they have now become only the second club in Premier League history to be relegated after they have won a Premier League title. Only 7 years after the fairy tale Premier League title-winning story, the Foxes have failed to secure a place in next year’s top-flight competition. Then now join Leeds United and Southampton in The Championship next season battling their way back to the Premier League. Follow Premier League LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

Leicester City have been relegated three times prior to this. Most recently, they were relegated in 2004. Hence, all three times were before they won the Premier League in 2015-16. Blackburn Rovers are the only other club in the Premier League era who were relegated after winning a premier league title in 1994-95. Blackburn spent the next four seasons struggling in English football’s top-tier competition and were relegated in 1998-99. Leicester City have now become the only second team after Blackburn with a similar history.
Leicester City, Leeds United, and Everton’s fates were depending on how the last matchday of the season goes. Leicester City needed an absolute win, but their fate depended on Everton’s defeat. They did hold onto their end as they won 2-1 against West Ham United, but so did Everton. With the narrow 1-0 win against Bournemouth, Everton secured their place in the top-flight competition next season. Whereas, their win meant Leicester City’s relegation to the second tier of English football whether they won or not.
Leicester City were determined to play their part in order to remain in Premier League competition next season. They took the game head-on as in the opening 20 minutes, they kept West Ham United under constant pressure in the hopes of getting a good enough lead. As the clock was nearing the half-time mark, Barnes took the lead for Leicester City in the 37th minute. The Foxes doubled the lead in the second half with the help of Faes who scored in the 61st minute.

Drama ensued when West Ham put one into the back of the net in the last 15 minutes. However, by then Abdoulaye Doucoure had put one in for Everton against Bournemouth on the other side of the competition. Unless Bournemouth levelled the game, there was no hope left for Leicester City, but they kept doing their part. As much as the Foxes’ Premier League title win was a fairy tale, their fall from grace will certainly serve as a cautionary tale to many clubs always keep an eye forward.
Leicester City were unmoved when they kept falling from the top. In a way, they were fine until they weren’t. They won the Premier League title 7 years ago, won the FA Cup 2 years ago and they were in the semi-final of a European competition. They challenged the ‘Big Six’ of the Premier League, yet fell so quickly to the bottom that they couldn’t tell head from tail. Will now have to try their best to come back from The Championship in one try.
