When O’Connor first won the world championship at UFC 189, the promotion broke with precedent by allowing live performances for the main event, and O’Connor joined the UFC legend for his ring walk. It was never permitted before, and UFC president Dana White hasn’t permitted it since, which makes her rendition of “The Foggy Dew” much more meaningful to the Irishman.

O’Connor, one of Ireland’s most well-known performers, made her debut in 1987 with the release of her album The Lion And The Cobra. Throughout her long career, she made it to the top 40 of the charts eight times, and with her rendition of the traditional Irish ballad, she cemented her place in McGregor’s career.

Conor McGregor, a fellow Irish star and former UFC two-division champion, responded to the news of O’Connor’s passing by movingly writing “Gutted” next to a broken heart emoji in a quote tweet of a video from UFC 189. O’Connor performed during the whole of McGregor’s walkout prior to his match with Chad Mendes for the interim featherweight championship at that event on July 11, 2015. McGregor eventually prevailed through a second-round TKO.
