Nottingham Forest defeated Arsenal 1-0 on Saturday to end Arsenal’s slim chances of winning the Premier League. Taiwo Awoniyi’s goal gave Nottingham Forest the victory and ensured their place in the top division. Just two months prior, Mikel Arteta’s club was eight points ahead at the top. Since then, however, they have had a dreadful season, with their most recent loss guaranteeing Manchester City’s second straight championship.

Nottingham Forest, led by Steve Cooper, were enjoying a miraculous comeback after accumulating 37 points to stave relegation back to the Championship. The game changed in the 19th minute when Martin Odegaard made a rare error that allowed Morgan Gibbs-White to advance before passing to Awoniyi, who poked the ball home and sparked frenzied celebrations.

Manchester City claim Premier League title, Arsenal succumb to NARROW…

As expected, Arsenal had the most of the ball but couldn’t convert it into goals. The superb Keylor Navas in goal for the hosts repeatedly denied Gabriel Jesus. Forest played on the counterattack, creating a number of opportunities.

With one game left, the outcome moved Arsenal up to second place with 81 points, while Manchester City now has 85 points with three games left, beginning on Sunday at home against Chelsea. After a terrible 23-year hiatus, Forest sits 16th and six points above the bottom three, guaranteeing them a second season in the Premier League.

Insidesport

Arsenal defender Gabriel grabbed the ball just in front of Awoniyi but smacked it against the striker’s leg before it went past Aaron Ramsdale. Awoniyi, who rediscovered his form just in time for Forest’s key run, had some luck on his side. Although, among other opportunities, a Felipe shot that deflected wide may have given Forest a bigger win.

Confirmed lineups:

Nottingham Forest: Navas, Aurier, Worrall, Felipe, Niakhate, Lodi, Gibbs-White, Yates, Mangala, Danilo, Awoniyi.

Arsenal: Ramsdale, White, Gabriel, Kiwior, Xhaka, Partey, Jorginho, Odegaard, Saka, Trossard, Jesus.
