After Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland scored in the second half of Wednesday’s thrilling game at the Emirates Stadium to give the champions a 3-1 victory, Manchester City passed Arsenal to take the top spot in the Premier League. Grealish completed an excellent team play by finishing low and deflected past Aaron Ramsdale in the 72nd minute. Ten minutes later, Haaland scored to seal the victory and deal a big blow to the top two teams in the Premier League.

In the 24th minute, City took the lead thanks to a superb finish from Kevin De Bruyne after Takehiro Tomiyasu made a defensive error. Bukayo Saka comfortably converted a penalty for Arsenal before the break after Ederson fouled Eddie Nketiah in the box. When VAR rightly determined that Haaland was offside in the second half, the visitors’ penalty was reversed, but City would not be stopped from dethroning Arsenal from the top spot for the first time since November 6.

While Arsenal still has a game to play, they still still need to travel to the Etihad Stadium for a potentially pivotal match on April 26. City presently leads the rankings on goal differential. Given that Mikel Arteta’s team has now earned just one point from their past three games, Arsenal’s first home loss of the season seemed like a pivotal moment in the fight for the crown and may very well turn out to be.

Ben White was unexpectedly dropped by the Arsenal manager in favour of Takehiro Tomiyasu at right back, and Jorginho, an experienced player who recently joined from Chelsea, replaced the injured Thomas Partey. Grealish’s pressure on Japanese international Tomiyasu led to a terrible back pass, which De Bruyne pounced on before launching a deft lob over stranded Aaron Ramsdale. Arteta’s decision backfired in his face.

While City were panicked and oddly appeared bent on squandering time, the hosts replied by grabbing control in midfield, far from knocking the stuffing out of Arsenal. Tomiyasu missed a chance with a volley, and Saka also had a chance but missed it because he took too long to take it. Eddie Nketiah, who had earlier missed an opportunity by heading it wide, was set up for a goal-scoring opportunity in the 39th minute but was stopped by City goalkeeper Ederson.

Nathan Ake hooked the ball off the line, but Anthony Taylor called foul on Ederson and pointed to the spot. Saka tucked his penalty past the Brazilian, saving him from receiving a second caution, which may have had a more significant effect on the match and the title battle. In the final seconds of the first half, Ake’s crossbar-flicking header off of Ruben Dias nearly gave City the lead back.

After the break, Arsenal lost its impetus and received a reprieve when City were given a penalty after Gabriel brought down Haaland in the area, but a VAR review determined the Norwegian was offside. As Haaland was stopped by Ramsdale following an error by Manchester City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko, Nketiah slid in to try to connect with a low cross and came inches away from giving Arsenal the lead.

However, Arsenal continued to create problems, and when Gabriel was tripped up on the edge of his penalty area, Haaland’s pass found Grealish, who then shot past Ramsdale. This time, Arsenal didn’t respond, and Haaland’s characteristically brutal goal eight minutes from time secured the win.
