The three players who Mikel Arteta removes from the starting lineup are all conspicuously benched rather than hurt. On the sidelines are Rob Holding, Thomas Partey, and Gabriel Martinelli. The previous two had a terrible experience last week at the Etihad, and two newcomers from January have taken their places.

After more than three months after joining, Jakub Kiwior is been given his first league start. Against his previous squad, Jorginho starts in midfield rather than Partey. Leandro Trossard, who has now made eight league starts since his own winter move from Brighton, is favoured above Martinelli.

There are just two changes for Chelsea tonight, but more crucially, Frank Lampard’s formation at the Emirates has changed. With Noni Madueke joining him in the front three, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang makes his first start since November against a team with which he spent four years. Conor Gallagher and Nathaniel Chalobah are the only two to withdraw.

It was obvious from the first whistle that Lampard’s adjustments would not have the desired outcome. It took Arsenal 18 minutes to take the lead. An unmarked Odegaard was waiting in the penalty area when Granit Xhaka fired a low pass across the face of the box. Odegaard took a first-time rising effort that hit the underside of the crossbar.

Soon after, Chelsea was defeated by a nearly similar goal. Once more, Xhaka sent the pass from the left, and Odegaard met the ball on the penalty spot and finished low and solid past Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was under pressure. After another lapse in defence from Chelsea three minutes later, Arsenal increased their lead to 3-0. Jesus smashed the ball in from close range after failing to clear the ball from a cross to the back post on many occasions.

At the beginning of the second half, Arsenal nearly increased their lead several times, including one occasion when they made Thiago Silva clear off his own goal line. But in the 65th minute, the visitors scored, going against the flow of play.

Madueke, a January acquisition for Chelsea, scored his first goal in a Chelsea jersey with just the second goal of Lampard’s tenure. He did so by taking a beautiful ball from Mateo Kovacic into his stride in the box and getting enough on his shot to beat Aaron Ramsdale. At least Chelsea played with greater vigour after the goal, but they were unable to threaten Arsenal’s three points.
