Argentina Head Coach: AFA REKINDLES hopes on Lionel Scaloni, extends contract through 2026 after World Cup Glory – Check Out

Two months after winning the world championship, Argentina announced that manager Lionel Scaloni has extended his contract through 2026. The 44-year-old, who earned seven national team playing caps, served as the nation’s Under-20 team manager and assistant coach until taking over as head coach of the senior squad in 2018.

After serving as caretaker manager for a while, Scaloni was initially opposed to being given the full-time position, but he ended the team’s 28-year trophy drought by guiding them to the 2021 Copa America, which was held a year before the World Cup.

While Lionel Messi was the center of attention heading into the 2022 competition, with this possibly being his final opportunity to lead Argentina to international success after missing out on all previous chances, Scaloni, a relatively inexperienced manager, was also under pressure to assemble a team that could advance and defeat anyone in their way.

At the winter tournament in the Middle East, La Albiceleste suffered a shocking loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening match, but they amazingly recovered to advance to the final, where they defeated France 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 deadlock after 120 minutes of play. Argentina was able to overcome a 36-year trophy drought with Scaloni’s assistance and exact revenge for losing the World Cup in 2014.

The task of defending the title in 2026 will present Scaloni with another opportunity to cement his place in Argentine football lore for his part in bringing the men’s team back to its former glory. Only hours before the FIFA The Best awards ceremony, in which Scaloni is up for Best Coach of 2022, the nomination was made. Emiliano “el Dibu” Martinez and Lionel Messi are also contenders for the Men’s Best Player and Best Goalkeeper awards.
