In a shocking turn of events, the World Championships silver medalist, wrestler Anshu Malik has become a victim of a fake MMS, which is doing the rounds on social media. The picture was morphed to create the video and has been circulated to many till now. Even though Anshu’s father has filed a complaint already, the incident has left her visibly distressed.
A teary-eyed Anshu took to social media on Tuesday, and clarified, it was not her in the video, and it was fake. The wrestler who won’t be playing in the Asian Games due to a knee injury is in Chennai, and undergoing rehab. She said, “I want to share something important with you all. For the last few days, a video was going viral in my name. But I want to tell you all, that I’m not in that video. This is an attempt to defame me.
Clarification on Fake Video
“The culprits have already confessed in front of the police and the proof is there for everyone to see on social media.” Anshu Malik continued that objectionable comments from people have caused her, and her family, mental trauma.
On the other hand, speaking to IANS, Sandeep Malik, Anshu’s uncle, alleged that the 22-year-old wrestler’s photo was picked from the internet. “The video is of a different girl and boy and it is around two years old. And the couple shown in the video are now husband and wife. The girl is from Himachal Pradesh and the boy is from Haryana. They are also wrestlers (local level).
“Anshu’s photo was used as a template in the video. We have demanded action against the person who did it. This is unacceptable… Anshu is a world-class wrestler yet someone is demeaning her name using fake and ugly methods. I am sure the police will crack the case soon. Our entire family is in shock right now,” Sandeep said.
For the record, Anshu Malik became India’s first female wrestler to win a silver medal in the 57 kg category at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships. She had won the gold in the 60 kg category of the Cadet Wrestling Championships. In 2020, she won the bronze in the 57 kg event at the Asian Wrestling Championships here. In the same year, she won the silver in the women’s 57 kg event at the Individual Wrestling World Cup held in Belgrade, Serbia.
