Big payday for stars, Franchises to have Rs 100 Cr purse in IPL 2024 Auction

The IPL 2024 Auction is likely to be held in late December, but not on Christmas Eve

T20’s biggest superstars are set for another huge payday when the IPL 2024 Auction rolls into town. As previously reported, BCCI is keen to host the event in late December. The Indian board is keen to avoid a clash with the Christmas holidays. As for the IPL Auction purse, it is set to be increased to a whopping Rs 100 crore.

“The focus is now on World Cup and once every detail is taken care of, we will move towards IPL. We will decide the date after the World Cup. It is most likely in the third or fourth week of December. But it will only be discussed at the IPL GC meeting later on,” a BCCI official added. “It will not be on Christmas Eve for sure. We will try to look at a comfortable date for all,” a BCCI official in the know told Insidesport.

The IPL Auction this time around is a mini auction with no cap on number of retentions. The new season will also see their budget cap increased to Rs 100 crore from Rs 95 crore in the previous season.

The budget increase to 95 crore itself saw a bidding frenzy. The IPL Auction record was broken thrice, with Sam Curran, Cameron Green, Ben Stokes and Nicholas Pooran all going in excess of 15 crore. Harry Brook also fetched an eye-watering 13 crore from the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

IPL 2024 Auction: What we know so far

  • IPL Auction likely in late December
  • No clash with Christmas like last year.
  • Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Kolkata are in contention to host
  • Final date and venue to be announced post World Cup 2023
  • IPL 2024 Auction budget set to be increased to Rs 100 crore.

One can again expect similar levels of spending when the Auction is held in December. Franchises have already begun putting their plans in place for the upcoming season. Delhi Capitals who finished second from bottom, have already trimmed their coaching staff. Lucknow Super Giants have replaced Andy Flower with Justin Langer. RCB have reportedly parted ways with Sanjay Bangar and Mike Hesson. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals are also among the franchises looking for a new coach.

The Indian board also wants to avoid any date closer to Christmas due to logistical problems. Due to the holiday season, it becomes difficult to book hotels. As for the venue, it is not decided yet. However, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Kolkata are likely destinations for IPL 2024 Auctions.

“It will not be on Christmas Eve for sure. We will try to look at a comfortable date for all,” the official added.

The IPL 2023 Auction was held in Kochi on December on December 23. The BCCI had real trouble finalising a hotel, while the likes of Ricky Ponting and others were present virtually. A similar arrangement is unlikely to be in place this time around with all staff and officials present.
