CWG 2022: Ex-shuttler Trupti Murgunde confident of PV Sindhu medal at Commonwealth Games, says ‘she has a good chance to win the gold in Birmingham’

Battling poor form

Sindhu has been in a poor run of form since the start of the tour this year. After winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in August last year, she missed the remainder of the 2022 season due to ankle injury.

She finally made her comeback at the start of the year at the Malaysia Open and suffered first round exit by losing against Carolina Marin. At the Indian Open too, the 27-year old suffered first round exit. She is yet to win a match in the BWF Tour this year. Her poor show has also made her slide down to 9th spot in the rankings. The former World No.2’s first big challenge will be to get back to her best form.

First tournament after parting ways with coach Park Tae-Sang

The All England Championships 2023 will be the first tournament for Sindhu after parting ways with coach Park Tae-Sang. Sindhu ended her three-year stint with the Korean, under whom she had won the Tokyo Olympics Bronze medal and the Commonwealth Games gold among other achievements. The Indian decided to part ways due to her poor run of form in recent times.

Sindhu will be entering All England Championships without a full-time coach by her side. However she will be assisted by former All England Champion Hafiz Hashim. It remains to be seen how this new arrangement  will impact her performance in the upcoming Super 1000 event.

Third seed Tai Tzu Ying in same quarter

World No.3 Tai Tzu Ying will be the biggest roadblock for Sindhu in the upcoming tournament. Tai Tzu Ying has an impeccable record against the Indian. Ever since 2019 both the players faced each other seven times and in every outing Tai Tzu Ying has got the better of the Indian.

Both the players are placed in the same quarter. They are likely to face each other in the quarterfinals. Sindhu last won against the third seed way back in 2019 during the World Championships. Their most recent meeting was at the Malaysia Masters last year and Sindhu lost the match in three games.

Old foe Carolina Marin in same half

If Sindhu manages to surpass Tai Tzu Ying’s challenge in the quarterfinal, she is likely to set up clash against former World No.1 Carolina Marin. Sindhu and Marin have enjoyed fierce rivalries over the years. Their most iconic match was at the Rio Olympic final where the two players waged intense battle before Marin managed to prevail to win the gold.

However in recent times, both the players suffered injuries and are now trying to claw their way back in the tour. They last played against each other earlier this year at the Malaysia Open. Marin won the match in three games. The Spaniard is also on a four-match win streak against the Indian. Sindhu will have a challenge to break Marin’s win streak.
