PV Sindhu loses to Sayaka Takahashi [JPN] 19-21, 21-16, 17-21
Japan’s unseeded Sayaka Takahashi stunned sixth seed Sindhu in a game that lasted three sets. Sindhu started the game positively by taking an early 4-1 lead. However Takahashi came back strongly and entered the first set break with a narrow 11-9 lead. From then on, the 29-year old didn’t give Sindhu a chance of making a comeback as she won the set 21-19.
Sindhu however, gave a fitting reply in the second as she raced to a 11-4 lead and won the set 21-16 to take the game into the third set. The Japanese then took lead in the final set right at the beginning but Sindhu too didn’t give up as the Japanese entered the break with a 11-10 lead. Soon after the break the lead swell to 16-11 and the Japanese didn’t look back as she ousted Sindhu.
The All England tournament title is the only BWF title missing from Sindhu . Only two Indians – Prakash Padukone and P Gopichand have won the title so far and with the defeat Sindhu once again missed the opportunity to win the tournament. Her best performance so far is two semi-final appearances in 2018 and 2021.
Lakshya Sen defeats Antonsen [DEN] 21-16, 21-18
Lakshya Sen Enters Quarterfinals: The unseeded Indian defeated the third-seed Danish shuttler by 21-16, 21-18 in a match that lasted for 55 minutes here at Utilita Arena Birmingham.
Playing at court 1, the 20-year-old Sen gained a two-point advantage at the first break in the match. With the lead in hand, the Indian never looked back as he claimed the first game very easily.
The third-seeded Dane did try to fight back against the world number 11 in the second game as the score was 14-14. But the Indian soon shifted his gears and broke the resistance of Antonsen to claim the match.
Saina Nehwal [IND] loses against Akane Yamaguchi [JPN] 21-14, 21-17, 21-17
Saina Nehwal Goes Down Fighting, loses to Akane Yamaguchi in 3 games: Earlier at Court 4, Olympic medallist Saina Nehwal tried her best but was unable to stop Japan’s world number two and second seed Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles event.
It was a very close-run match which the Japanese star won in three games. The pair traded the lead in the first game, but it was Yamaguchi who drew the first blood.
In the second game, the Indian who is celebrating her 32nd birthday, controlled the rallies from the get-go and eventually forced the decider.
Reigning world champion Yamaguchi looked comfortable in the third game as she triumphed 21-14, 17-21, 21-17 in a match that lasted for 50 minutes.

The Last 16 battles will kick-off at 2.30PM IST. Along with Saina who plays World No. 2, Lakshya Sen too has a big challenge up his hands. Sen will take on World No. 3 Anders Antonsen.
Kidambi Srikanth vs Ginting [IDN]
Former World No.1 Kidambi Srikanth will look to continue a great start against Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia in the second-round clash. He thrashed Wangcharoen 21-18, 21-14 in the opening round. Srikanth will look to avenge Parupalli Kashyap’s straight-set defeat to Ginting in the opening clash.
The two players will meet each for the fourth time on the Badminton court. Srikanth leads the head-to-head battle 2-1. The duo had last faced off each other in Singapore Open where Srikanth defeated Ginting in straight sets. Can he repeat the heroics?
