All England Badminton Highlights – Lakshya Sen enters finals: India’s Lakshya Sen gave a strong fightback to clinch a come-from behind victory and advanced to the final of the All England championship on Saturday. He defeated Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia 21-13, 12-21, 21-19 in the semi-final. By virtue of the win, he became the fifth Indian to reach the final of the All England Championship. Lakshya Sen started the game on a positive note by taking lead early on in the game. He entered the first set break with a 11-7 lead and never looked back as he closed the first set with a 21-13 win.

However Zii Jia Lee made a brilliant comeback in the second set. He brought forth his attacking game and challenged the 20-year old Indian. Lakshya had no answers to his smashes that gave the Malaysian 11-3 lead in the break. Trailing 5-16, Lakshya held his nerves and brought him back into the game by winning five successive points. Lee however breaked Lakshya’s service and won the set 21-12 to take the game into the third set.

In the third set too the Malaysian dominated as he maintained a narrow lead right from the start. He went into the break with a two point lead of 11-9 and bettered it by leading the game 16-12. Just when it looked like the game was slipping away from Lakshya, the Indian scripted a terrific comeback. He started playing aggressively and challenged his opponent with some powerful smashes that earned him quick points. He soon reached the match point and closed out the third set 21-19 to march into the final.

  • Lee manages to break Lakshya’s serve by winning a point in what was the longest rally in the game.
  • Lakshya helds his nerve and gets five successive points to reduce the lead 10-16.
  • Lakshya couldn’t find answers to Lee’s assault as he trails 5-16.
  • Lee enters the break with a massiive 11-3 lead.
  • Lee dominates the set as he takes seven consecutive points to race to 9-2
  • Lee starts well and brings forth his attacking game to take 2-1 lead.

Game 2

  • Lakshya wins the first set 21-13.
  • The Malaysian struggles to control his shots by hitting  wide, giving Lakshya easy points.
  • Lakshya gets stronger with each rallies as he is getting back-to-back points.
  • After a bout of intense riveting rallies, Lee unleashes a smash to reduce the deficit.
  • Lakshya enters the break with a 11-7 lead.
  • Lakshya takes four consecutive points to improve his lead from 6-6 to 10-6.
  • Lee hits one away to give Lakshya 5-4 lead
  • Lee commits a fault, Lakshya leads 2-1.
  • Lakshya Sen’s error gives Lee first point
  • Lakshya gets the first point as Lee hits it wide.

This is the first time that any Indian Women Doubles pair has made it to the Last 4 of All England Badminton.

The Indian duo defeated World No. 2 pair of Lee SoHee & SHIN Seungchan of South Korea. Indian pair won – 14-21, 22-20, 21-15

Satwik & Chirag LOSE in Quarterfinals: Meanwhile, men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost to top seed Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia 22-24, 17-21.

The Indians were leading 20-15 in the first game before the Indonesians fought back to win the game 24-22. In the second game, the Indians fought hard and it was a see-saw battle till the 15th point before the Indonesians raced ahead to win the match.

Earlier on Thursday, Kidambi Srikanth, PV Sindhu & Saina Nehwal all crashed out at the Last 16 stage on Friday.
