Akshay Kumar shows large-heartedness, saves IPL team by terminating own contract

Amrit Mathur lavishes praise on Akshay Kumar's saving act for Delhi Capitals (Daredevils) back in 2008 when the actor could have easily sued the IPL franchise

Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is known for his large-heartedness, and several actors vouch for it. In yet another incidence, the actor terminated his own whopping contract for Delhi Capitals (Delhi Daredevils) back in 2009 to save the team from incurring huge losses. The old incident has been brought into the limelight by veteran administrator Amrit Mathur in his autobiography ‘Pitchside: My Life in Indian Cricket’.

“Akshay signed a three-year deal with Delhi Daredevils to shoot promotional films, attend meet and greet events and make appearances at corporate events…” Mathur wrote in his book. “Apart from Kotla act (he performed daring stunts), nothing much happened because DD didn’t know how to leverage him. At the end of the season, during an elaborate post-mortem held against the backdrop of serious financial losses, DD decided to cancel or renegotiate the contract.”

For the uninitiated, Akshay Kumar was signed as a brand ambassador for three by DC from 2008 to 2011. However, with DC not making much profit during the first year, they struggled to cope up with losses.

Mathur also elaborated on how the Bollywood Actor’s contract provided no exit, but rather gave him guarantees for a period of three years. The Delhi franchise also approached Akshay’s staff to find a way to get out of this but to no avail. It is during this phase that Akshay told Mathur to end the contract. Mathur also stated he met the Bollywood Actor during one of his film shoot in 2008.

“After the shot, we returned to his vanity van, and I very hesitantly explained the reason for my visit and outlined DD’s financial troubles. No problem ji, he said sympathetically. If it’s not working, let us close it. I thought I hadn’t heard him right. “Seeing my confused look, Akshay clarified slowly let us end this.

When I mumbled about the most stringent contract clauses, he reassured me, No problem I will tell the lawyer.”

Mathur could not believe the Bollywood actor waived off such a huge contract when easily he could have sued DC and got more money. Mathur also saluted Akshay’s magnanimity and is forever grateful for his gesture.
