AIFF approves 5 teams in I-League, appoint Deputy General Secretary

The inaugural annual general meeting (AGM) of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Executive Committee and its state units will take place under the fresh leadership of Kalyan Chaubey and Shaji Prabhakaran.

AIFF Meeting: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) approved all five corporate applications for direct entrance into the I-League beginning next season on Monday, in addition to naming Satyanarayan M as its deputy secretary general. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey offered the name of the current secretary of the Karnataka State Football Association. The move was approved by the AIFF’s executive committee, which met on Monday in Bengaluru.

The Committee, in line with AIFF’s long-term plan, Vision 2047, felt it would be prudent to revive a legacy competition like the Federation Cup. To that extent, it decided that the Federation Cup will be the premier cup competition in India from the 2023-24 season onwards.

The AIFF’s league committee had already accepted all five proposals, which had been reviewed by an independent financial expert. The AIFF issued a tender in May seeking new corporate clubs with direct access into Indian football’s second level, and proposals were received from Punjab, Delhi, Bengaluru Varanasi, and Haryana.

Bunkerhill Private Limited, based in Ambala, Haryana, has a contract with Mohammedan Sporting Club. If they continue to be associated with the Kolkata-based club, they will withdraw from their proposal, resulting in four new teams in the 2023-24 I-League. Bunkerhill has a month to make a decision on their offer.

The AIFF was rattled prior to the executive committee meeting by charges of mindless spending by incoming president Kalyan Chaubey and secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran, as well as arbitrary allocation of I-League broadcast rights.

When asked to explain the appointment of a new deputy secretary general, the official stated that it was done to simply replace the position that was vacant in February. On Mr Chaubey’s recommendation, the Committee chose KSFA General Secretary Mr Satyanarayan M as the new Deputy Secretary General of the All India Football Federation.
