The drama unfolded during the final over of the Renegades’ innings. Tom Rogers tried to leave the crease early before Zampa had completed bowling the delivery. The reason why the third umpire overruled the appeal was that the bowler’s arm had “gone past the vertical”. Zampa had finished his action before running out Rogers at non striker’s end.

The ongoing season of the Big Bash League (BBL) has already witnessed controversial decisions. Michael Neser’s catch of Jordan Silk during Brisbane Heat match against the Sydney Sixers was in news as questions over the laws of the gentlemen’s game were raised.

What does MCC law say for Mankading a batsman

Last year Marylebone Cricket Club made a change to the Mankading law making it a legitimate mode of dismissal. The MCC released a media statement that said,” Law 41.16 – running out the non-striker – has been moved from Law 41 (Unfair Play) to Law 38 (Runout). The wording of the Law remains the same”.

Insidesport

MCC Law 41.16.1 states: “If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out. In these circumstances, the non-striker will be out run out if he/she is out of his/her ground when his/her wicket is put down by the bowler throwing the ball at the stumps or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered.”

Tom Rogers fifer for Renegades derails Melbourne Stars chase

In the low-scoring encounter between Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars, it was the Renegades who came out victorious. Renegades posted 141-7 in 20 over with Martin Guptill (32), Shaun Marsh (32), and Mackenzie Harvey (32*) making major contributions with the bat. Zampa finished with a single wicket of Akeal Hosein. Chasing 142 for victory, Stars’ innings were derailed by a terrific bowling performance from Tom Rogers. Rogers picked up a five-wicket haul ending the match with figures of 5/16 and helping Renegades to 33 run victory.
