19 years, 94 goals and 150 appearances later, Sunil Chhetri ends his gliterring career

Sunil Chhetri is synonymous with the Indian Football Team. Ever since making his debut in 2005 against, Sunil Chhetri has been the saviour of the ‘sleeping giants’. As the legend called curtains on his stellar 19-year career, journalists from all over the country flooded in for his last-ever press conference ahead of the India vs Kuwait game that too after the day of the election results.

On May 16th, the Indian football team captain announced his decision to end his glittering 19-year-old career with India’s game against Kuwait being his last. 100s of journalists from all over the country flew in Kolkata to attend his last ever game. The venue was packed to capacity, as Sunil Chhetri entered alongside head coach Igor Stimac.

100 journalists at an Indian football event given the sport’s historical struggle for mainstream attention in the country, where cricket overwhelmingly dominates the media landscape is quite appreciating. However, with Sunil Chhetri, the GOAT playing his last game, this has to be the most befitting celebration of his stellar career.
