T20 World Cup: Pakistan players engage in war of words over Babar Azam’s captaincy

T20 World Cup 2024: Babar Azam has led Pakistan Cricket Team in 81 T20Is till now and has won 46 of those, while losing 26.

Pakistan cricket is in doldrums at the moment. The have been skipper issues in the past and the team performance has come down significantly. And of course, the fans and the ex-players are constantly engaged in debates and blame games. On Tuesday, something similar happened with two current players, who are not part of the Pakistani team for the T20 World Cup – Imam-ul-Haq and Ahmed Shehzad.

Babar Azam’s Captaincy Becomes Talking Point

In a video clip that has gone viral, the two seen in a heated verbal duel, over Babar Azam’s captaincy. Firstly, Shehzad alleged that Babar has a lot of influence in the selection of the players in the team, and has personal biases. He even went on to question the bringing back of Babar as the captain of the team.

On the other hand, Imam was quick to defend ‘friend’ Babar and said that it was more of PCB’s decision, than that of the current skipper. In fact, Imam vociferously defended the latter and said that it was under Babar Azam that Pakistan went on to reach the final of the T20 World Cup 2022.

Poor Performances by Pakistan Cricket Team

This year, Pakistan has managed to win only five matches out of 15 played. In those, they have lost against ‘B’ team from New Zealand, Ireland, and England. Now, they play their first T20 World Cup 2024 match against USA on June 6, in New York. Their real test will come against India, on June 9 at the same venue.
