The third match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 was a nail-biter, with Namibia edging past Oman in a dramatic Super Over finish. While Oman’s impressive bowling attack, spearheaded by Mehran Khan, forced a tie, Namibia’s David Wiese emerged as the ultimate hero.
Oman fight back after early collapse
Batting first, Oman faced an uphill battle after losing their openers for ducks within the first two balls, courtesy of some exceptional bowling by Namibia’s Ruben Trumpelmann. Despite a valiant effort from Zeeshan Maqsood to steady the ship, Oman could only manage a modest total of 109 runs.
Namibia chase falters at last hurdle
Chasing a seemingly achievable target, Namibia appeared in control throughout the majority of their innings. Openers Nikolaas Davin and Jan Frylinck navigated the early stages cautiously before building a solid partnership. However, Oman’s spinners, Aqib Ilyas and Zeeshan Maqsood, applied the brakes, restricting the run flow.
Just when victory seemed within reach for Namibia, Khan produced a magical final over. He dismissed the well-set Frylinck and Zane Green in quick succession, leaving Namibia needing just two runs from the final ball.
Drama ensued when Wiese missed the last delivery, but a fumble by the wicket-keeper resulted in a stolen bye, forcing the game into a Super Over.
David Wiese shines in super over
The Super Over saw Wiese take center stage. He smashed 13 runs off his four deliveries with the bat, putting Namibia in a strong position. He then carried his momentum into his bowling spell, conceding only 10 runs and claiming the crucial wicket of Oman’s big hitter, Naseem Khushi. This exceptional performance secured a thrilling victory for Namibia.
Trumpelmann stars with Ball earlier
Earlier in the day, Trumpelmann had laid the foundation for Namibia’s success with his superb bowling display. His pinpoint yorkers dismissed both Oman openers for ducks, setting the tone for a disciplined bowling performance from Namibia.
