Singapore Open: Treesa-Gayatri pull off yet another upset, down World No. 6 pair to reach semis

The Indian pair came from a set down to keep India's hopes alive in the tournament.

The Indian pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are on a roll at the Singapore Open 2024. After defeating World No. 2 in the Round of 16 on Thursday, Treesa and Gayatri pulled off yet another upset on Friday when they beat World No. 6 Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong in the quarter finals. The Indian pair came from a set down to beat the Korean pair 18-21, 21-19 and 24-22. Courtesy of the win, the pair kept Indian hopes alive in the competition and will play in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Strong start from South Korean opponents

The start wasn’t ideal for Treesa-Gayatri as the South Korean pair came out all guns blazing in the first set. In spite of the Indian pair fighting until the end in the first set, Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong opened up a 3-point lead and won the game.

Pulsating finish to an entertaining match

With all to play for in the final set, both pairs went neck-to-neck right from the start. The South Korean pair saved three match points during the set, but it was the Indians who had the last laugh. Treesa-Gayatri persevered to win the tie 24-22.
