Uruguay’s second-highest goal scorer Edinson Cavani announces retirement from international football

Cavani said he was fortunate to have worn the Uruguayan team's shirt and thanked the team for the lessons he had learned over the years.

Former Manchester United and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani on Thursday announced his decision to retire from international football. Cavani, who plays for Argentine club Boca Juniors right now, posted a lengthy statement on his official social media profile announcing his decision.

Cavani bids goodbye

Cavani said he was fortunate to have worn the Uruguayan team’s shirt and thanked the team for the lessons he had learned over the years. After that, the seasoned striker declared that he would support the team and their on-field accomplishments.

“I just want to thank you for every lesson you made me experience in your process. I don’t want to extend. Today there are few words but deep feelings. Thanks to each of the people who were part of this path for so many years,” Cavani wrote on his message.

“I was and will always be blessed to have worn this shirt to represent what I love most in El Murido, my country. They were undoubtedly many precious years, I would have a thousand things to say, tell and remember, but today I want to dedicate myself to this new stage of my career and give everything where I have to be.”

Cavani records for Uruguay

Cavani has scored the 2nd highest goals for Uruguay in the country’s history, only behind Luis Suarez. Cavani has 58 goals for the country in 136 appearances. He has six Ligue 1 titles, and also has a Copa America trophy to show for his hard work.
