PV Sindhu nearly beats Carolina Marin in Singapore Open, shows can bag Paris 2024 medal

The last time PV Sindhu had won a match against Carolina Marin, was in 2018, during the Malaysia Open quarters.

On Thursday, India’s ace shuttler PV Sindhu came close beat the former World No. 1 Carolina Marin of Spain, in the Round of 16 of the Singapore Open. The 28-year-old Indian was defeated in three games by Marin 21-13, 11-21, 20-22 in over and hour of brutal display.

Marin Undefeated by Sindhu for Six Years

Struggling largely on account of form and injuries, Sindhu managed a great match vs Marin. But having said that, the latter’s stupendous record against Sindhu still stands. The Indian’s last win over her came in Malaysia Open 2018 quarters. On the other hand, the Spaniard extended her record over Sindhu to 12/6.

But this performance by Sindhu, could well be the moment in her road to Paris 2024, that could change everything for her. The Hyderabadi looked the better player for the most part of the match, but couldn’t close it when it mattered the most. She moved exceptionally well on the court and kept up the pressure on Marin throughout.

Sindhu vs Marin, As it Happened

Sindhu started dominantly as went on to take a 10-6 lead in the first game. That meant, she didn’t have to work exceptionally hard to pocket the first game. Come the second, Marin came back strongly and did not give a chance to Sindhu. The match got tantalisingly close as both women were tied at 20-20 in the third. But Marin held her nerve to beat the Indian yet again.
