Italy legend Leonardo Bonucci announces retirement after glittering career of 19 years

Bonucci said he wants to end his career with a trophy, which he can achieve with Fenerbahce if they defeat Istanbulspor and Galatasaray lose their final league game.

Former Juventus and Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci has announced the end of his illustrious 19-year career. The 37-year-old scored in the Wembley final to help Roberto Mancini’s team win Euro 2020. During his two stints at Juventus, he also won eight Serie A titles, four Coppa Italia titles, and five Italian Super Cups. In addition, Bonucci played for AC Milan and Inter Milan before concluding his career with Fenerbahce in Turkey.

Last dance pending?

After an unsuccessful summer transfer to Union Berlin, the defender joined Fenerbahce in the January transfer window. On Sunday, he will play his final game against Istanbulspor. Bonucci said he wants to end his career with a trophy, which he can achieve with Fenerbahce if they defeat Istanbulspor and Galatasaray lose their final league game.

He confirmed his retirement on social media, saying: “As a child, I dreamed of this story I would tell, promising myself achievements to embrace against the biggest, celebrating, having faith through difficulties with courage.”

It was a pleasure for me to be a part of this wonderful family. I tried to show my best on and off the field, but most importantly, we will fight our last battle tomorrow. I want to finish my career with a cup, and we have a chance to become champions tomorrow,” Bonucci told Fenerbahce in its official statement.
