Nepal fans up in arms, Protests erupt over Sandeep Lamichhane’s visa denial for T20 World Cup

While Lamichhane's presence would have undoubtedly bolstered Nepal's chances, the team has already arrived in the USA and begun their preparations for the tournament.

Disappointment has turned into frustration for Nepali cricket fans as news of Sandeep Lamichhane’s visa denial for the T20 World Cup spread. Youths in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, took to the streets in protest, demanding a visa for their star leg-spinner.

Visa Hurdle for Sandeep Lamichhane

Sandeep Lamichhane, a pivotal player in Nepal’s qualification journey for the T20 World Cup, was recently acquitted of rape charges by the Patan High Court.

This legal victory paved the way for his return to competitive cricket, with the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) lifting his suspension. However, his dream of participating in the World Cup was dashed when the US embassy denied his visa application.

Fans demand action for Nepal Cricket Team

News of the visa denial sparked outrage among Nepali cricket fans. Determined to see Sandeep Lamichhane play, protestors gathered outside the Prime Minister’s building in Baluwatar and planned further demonstrations outside the US embassy.

Their aim is to pressure the authorities to grant Lamichhane the necessary visa.

Sandeep Lamichhane’s absence is a significant blow to the Nepali team. He was their leading wicket-taker during the T20 World Cup Asia Qualifiers, playing a crucial role in securing their World Cup spot.

His exceptional performance, particularly in the crucial semi-final match against UAE where he took 2 wickets for just 14 runs, showcased his talent and importance to the team.

While Lamichhane’s presence would have undoubtedly bolstered Nepal’s chances, the team has already arrived in the USA and begun their preparations for the tournament.

They played a warm-up match against Canada on May 27th but unfortunately lost by 63 runs. Their focus now shifts to facing the USA in their second practice game on May 30th before taking on the Netherlands in their opening World Cup match.
