Bayern Munich appoint former Manchester City star Vincent Kompany as new head coach

Bayern Munich finish third in the league, a significant 18 points behind champions Bayer Leverkusen

Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich confirmed on Wednesday, May 29, that Vincent Kompany will take over as head coach starting the 2024-25 season. Kompany, the former captain of Manchester City, has signed a three-year deal lasting until June 2027. He joins Bayern after leaving Burnley, who faced relegation from the Premier League this past season.

“It’s a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football,” said the former Manchester City defender.

Vincent Komany to succeed Thomas Tuchel

Kompany will succeed Thomas Tuchel, who departed following a season that saw Bayern finish third in the league, a significant 18 points behind champions Bayer Leverkusen. Additionally, Bayern Munich’s campaign ended in the Champions League semi-finals with a defeat to Real Madrid.

Kompany, who retired in 2020, joined Burnley from Anderlecht in 2022 and agreed to a five-year contract extension last year. Kompany has a great reputation from his time at Anderlecht and Burnley, however the Clarets’ relegation despite lofty pre-season hopes has not gone well for the Belgian.

Kompany, the four-time Premier League winner with Manchester City, took over as head coach of Anderlecht in 2020 after serving as player-manager before heading to Turf Moor.
