The Shreyas Iyer redemption story: From BCCI contract snub to IPL trophy victory

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer had the perfect response for his naysayers as he led his team to their 3rd IPL title

Shreyas Iyer has done it! The KKR skipper has successfully guided his team to their third IPL title, that too in a dominating fashion. The Knight Riders handed a heavy one-sided defeat to Pat Cummins and co. in the finals of IPL 2024 at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai on Sunday to add another feather to their cap.

Iyer headed into IPL 2024 with a lot of burden on his back. First, he was out of the IND vs ENG series owing to a back injury. He then missed a couple of Ranji Trophy games for Mumbai citing back injuries following which he was axed from BCCI’s central contract. When everything seemed to be going wrong for the star batter, the IPL came as a perfect opportunity for the Mumbai batter to silence the critics and he did just that in an emphatic fashion.

How Shreyas Iyer recovered from BCCI contract snub to reach IPL summit

Kolkata Knight Riders were arguably the most consistent side in IPL 2024. Shreyas Iyer and co. finished the league stage of the tournament at the top of the points table, winning 9 matches and losing just three games. While the credit goes to the team for ensuring performance from all quarters, the captaincy of Iyer and its impact cannot be ruled out. Shreyas effectively managed his group as captain, despite not being in the best form of his life as a batter.

Talking about Shreyas Iyer‘s batting, the star had a decent run in IPL 2024. The swashbuckling batter amassed 351 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 146.86. In a way, Iyer provided the perfect response to his snub from the T20 World Cup squad – not just with KKR’s title win but also with his at-par performance with the bat in the tournament.

Latest IPL news

Recently, Shreyas Iyer took a dig at the BCCI and the NCA over no one allegedly ‘believing his injury’. He hinted about raising concerns on residual pain even after recovering at the NCA. These concerns, according to Iyer, were not adequately addressed.

Basically I was struggling after the ODI World Cup in terms of longer format. And when I raised my concern no one was agreeing to it. But at the same time, the competition is with myself,” Iyer said in a press-conference in Chennai.
