PCB clarifies Shaheen Afridi vice-captaincy controversy for T20 World Cup: ‘Never offered’

With the controversy cleared, all eyes are now on the upcoming T20 World Cup. Shaheen Afridi remains a key player for Pakistan, and both fans and the board will be hoping for a strong performance from him and the entire team in the tournament.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has moved to clarify reports suggesting left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi rejected the role of vice-captain for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

Shaheen Afridi rejects Pakistan vice-captaincy?

Several news outlets claimed on Saturday that Afridi had turned down the opportunity to be Babar Azam’s deputy in the global tournament. However, the PCB maintains that the national selectors never formally offered the position.

No Vice-Captain Needed for Pakistan Team

According to a source close to one of the selectors, the board’s online meeting focused on squad selection. Notably, “six out of seven selectors were not in favour of having a vice-captain” for Babar Azam as per PTI. Minutes from this meeting reportedly confirm this stance.

Informal Inquiry, Not a Formal Offer

The source further revealed that an individual selector did discuss the vice-captaincy with Afridi back in March, but in a private capacity, not as an official offer. Afridi reportedly declined this informal inquiry.

Media reports spark controversy

The PCB views the recent media frenzy as an attempt to “tarnish the image” of the board and the selection committee. The source acknowledges Afridi’s disappointment after his brief stint as T20 captain ended in January.

Focus on T20 World Cup

With the controversy cleared, all eyes are now on the upcoming T20 World Cup. Shaheen Afridi remains a key player for Pakistan, and both fans and the board will be hoping for a strong performance from him and the entire team in the tournament.
