Virat Kohli had a lot to answer before the IPL 2024. The Indian batter was criticised for his slow strike-rate in T20s. Even reports surfaced claiming that Kohli will be omitted from the T20 World Cup squad owing to his poor strike-rate. Many legends of the game, including Sunil Gavaskar criticised Kohli for his approach in T20s. However, Kohli chose to answer his critics in the best way possible- with the bat. He scored a massive 741 runs in 15 matches, keeping the Orange Cap with him.
His ex-RCB teammate AB De Villiers said he enjoyed Kohli answering his critics back and claimed it was unfair that Kohli had to be on the receiving end of the criticism. De Villiers also revealed that while playing against Virat, he would refrain his team from sledging Kohli, knowing the consequences fully well.

“I thought it was… really bad for someone like that for a hero and a role model of the country to get so much criticism around that. But the way I know him, I just knew and that’s exactly what I mentioned on my show. I said, guys, you have no idea what happens to this guy when he catches criticism. The many years I’ve played against him, I used to tell the players in the team room, you do not say one word to Virat on the pitch because he will come out and he will score a big 100 if you try and chirp him,” ABD said.
De Villiers claimed that the criticisms worked as a ‘blessing in disguise’ for Kohli.
“Maybe it was a blessing in disguise, getting a bit of criticism, because stuff like that motivates him so much,” he said.
