Why Sunil Chhetri is retiring from international football? And it’s not because he ‘was feeling tired’

Chhetri said that it was not because he was feeling tired or something else, but he wanted India to provide a chance and help India nurture young strikers waiting for their opportunity to shine

Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri on Thursday announced that he will retire from the International team after India’s World Cup qualifier game against Kuwait on June 6th. The announcement came as a surprise to all, and Chhetri revealed that decided to hang up his boots to provide more opportunities to the upcoming young strikers.

Time for next crop of No.9s to step up?

Sunil Chhetri posted a long video on X (previously Twitter) to announce that he will no longer play for the country after India’s game against Kuwait. Chhetri said that it was not because he was feeling tired or something else, but he wanted India to provide a chance and help India nurture young strikers waiting for their opportunity to shine, something that would not be possible with him being around.

It’s not that I was feeling tired. It’s not that I was feeling this or that. When when the instinct came that it should be my last game then I thought about it a lot. And eventually, I came to this decision,” Chhetri said in the video.

I think it’s time for for our country to see the next number nine it is time that we build on it already we are a little bit handicapped because a lot of boys do not play as number nine is at the clubs and that’s a different topic we can talk about at least now when I’m not going to be there I am pretty sure there are so many of them are going to step up and they will need time,” he added.
