Did Team India miss the trick by not including Ruturaj Gaikwad for ‘slow’ Caribbean pitches?

Chepauk has always had slower pitches compared to the rest of IPL venues, much like pitches of West Indies. In Chepauk, Ruturaj has scored runs this season at an average of almost 110.

India had a lot of contenders to pick from in the T20 World Cup 2024. There’s no dearth of talent in India and the selectors had the tough job of choosing the best 15 out of them. For the openers’ slots, they went with Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, while keeping Shubman Gill in the reserves. CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad did not get a call-up, and that can comeback to haunt India during the latter stages of the tournament.

Ruturaj ruling in Chepauk’s slow pitches

Ruturaj Gaikwad has always been a consistent performer, and he has taken it a notch up this year. He has been in impeccable form, specially at Chennai Super Kings‘ home this season. Ruturaj has scored runs in almost every game at Chepauk. Chepauk has always had slower pitches compared to the rest of IPL venues, much like pitches of West Indies where T20 World Cup 2024 will be played at. He has been on fire at the venue, playing one magnificent innings after the other.

In 7 home matches, the CSK skipper has amassed a massive 438 runs, at an average of almost 110. Since scoring 15 at the season opener, Ruturaj has gone on to score at least 40 runs in each of his innings at the venue. India would have been helped by Ruturaj’s presence in the team, specially in pitches where it would not have been easy to play strokes. Did Team India miss the trick by not selecting Ruturaj? We hope they did not, although it might look like a costly omission in the future.
