‘Hardik Pandya wouldn’t be in India World Cup campaign if Rohit Sharma…’

As the T20 World Cup approaches, the dynamics between Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya will continue to be under scrutiny.

As the Mumbai Indians (MI) faced an early exit from the IPL 2024 playoff race, scrutiny intensified over their performance and internal dynamics, particularly concerning the relationship between captain Hardik Pandya and senior player Rohit Sharma.

Despite the team’s attempts at a turnaround under Hardik Pandya’s leadership, their campaign never gained momentum, resulting in their elimination from the playoffs contention.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke offered his perspective on the situation, suggesting that the rift between Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya might not be as severe as portrayed in the media.

Clarke highlighted Pandya’s inclusion in India’s T20I World Cup squad as evidence of Rohit Sharma’s influence in team selection. He emphasised Rohit’s desire to win the World Cup and suggested that if the conflict between the two players was significant, Hardik Pandya would not have been chosen for the campaign.

“You know what… knowing Rohit Sharma, he will wrap his arms around Hardik Pandya. That shows the character that Rohit is. He is the Indian captain and trust me… he wants to win that World Cup. He has had a lot of say in the 15 that is picked by India,” Former Aussie captain said on Around the Wicket podcast.

“It’s very different to let’s say the Australian 15. They are heavily focussed on spin bowling. If the beef between Rohit and Hardik was as strong as people think, Hardik wouldn’t be in that World Cup campaign. The Indian captain has that much power.”

Rohit Sharma support for Hardik Pandya

Michael Clarke commended Rohit Sharma’s leadership qualities, expressing confidence that Rohit would support Pandya and ensure his focus on the upcoming World Cup. Despite hints at division within the Mumbai Indians camp, Clarke acknowledged Pandya’s talent and potential contribution to the Indian team.

He noted Pandya’s determination to excel, especially following his shortened ODI World Cup campaign due to injury.

Path forward for India Cricket Team

Clarke stressed the importance of performance, indicating that Pandya’s inclusion in the Indian squad would be contingent upon his on-field contributions.

He recognised the significance of Pandya’s role in both batting and bowling and suggested that Rohit Sharma would support and motivate Pandya to elevate his game.
