Despite widespread criticism, SA20 2025 likely to borrow IPL’s Impact Player Rule

Amidst widespread criticism, SA20 likely to adopt IPL's new Impact Player rule from 2025

SA20 is planning to implement the Impact Player Rule in it’s rule. Now prominent in the Indian Premier League, the agenda to implement the impact player rule in SA20 will be up for discussions. SA20 had previously discussed on using the rule last year, but concerns arose regarding all-rounders who could end up earning less game time.

But since the Impact Rule is now being well responded in IPL 2024, there will be discussion to use the rule in SA20 in the upcoming year, i.e in 2025. But the discussion to take place will be up for the South Africa’s administrators meeting. But as per reports from Cricbuzz, the meeting will be held after October when the ICC goes on to publish their list of playing conditions.

Pundits voice against Impact Rule

It is safe to say that pundits and experts have strongly voiced their opinion against the Impact Rule in IPL. Some have often went on to retort that the addition of an extra player makes a side batting heavy while adding another bowler to remove a batter, makes it bowling heavy.

This in turn changes the balance of the team. “It’s a terrible rule. You’re negating the allrounder, and I don’t think that’s good for cricket. Especially for India, who are trying to grow their allrounders. As an allrounder, I don’t want to see that. You want them to play a major role,” Jacques Kallis told Cricbuzz.

But there is a catch. Since all the SA20 teams are owned by the IPL franchises, they might be tempted to go against the rule. All 6 teams know there is more-or-less a substitution system in the league. A total of 13 players are named in the teamsheet in SA20 from which 11 play on the field.

While the controversy continues regarding the Impact Rule in IPL, it remains to be seen what SA20 decides.
