PSL no match for IPL: Empty stadiums lead to Pakistan Super League suffering huge losses

To compete with the IPL next year, the PCB harbours hopes of conducting the PSL during BCCI's T20 league -- during April-May 2025 window.

What could the correct criteria to judge the success of a tournament? Well, on a smaller scale, the star power in a tournament might be the deciding factor, but in the long run, it is only the profit-loss statement. Now, as per a report in Cricket Pakistan, PSL 9 has proven to be a profit venture for the PCB, whereas a few franchises have incurred losses.

Losses Incurred by PCB During PSL 9

The report spoke about how nearly empty grounds at Karachi and Rawalpindi affected the ticket revenue. Then the playoffs and the final held at the National Stadium also was in red. Not just that, even the increasing dollar prices against PKR meant, the teams had to pay higher salaries to the players.

The ticket sales saw an overall dip of 17%, that led to a loss of PKR 100 million to the PCB. On the other hand, player salaries increased to PKR 37 million. As per estimates, the total revenue generated by PSL comes to over 7 billion, which means each franchise will get 98 crore in their purse.

But there’s a twist in the tale as all the team expenses, like the salaries, hotel stays, air tickets..could range between 55 to 60 million for the teams. And after all that, some teams might end up making losses.

The Positive Side of PSL 9

Teams like Islamabad United, Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi might be on the recovery route due to sponsorships. There is some outstanding amount that the PCB is yet to receive from the stakeholders. But all-in-all, for other teams, it was losses all the way.

IPL vs PSL

The PCB has always been in a virtual fight with it’s so called rival league — the IPL, where they try and compete with one of the biggest leagues in the world. But if the revenue of the BCCI from last year’s IPL is to be looked at, PSL stands no where. Just the advertising revenue from IPL 2023 was a massive INR 10,120 crore.

As per market research and analysis firm Redseer Strategy Consultants, all the franchises combined earned INR 1450 crore through advertising, while the BCCI’s share stood at 430 crore. Fantasy platforms earned 2800 crore during last year’s tournament.
