MS Dhoni mania extends beyond borders, Pathirana opens on ‘father figure’s’ influence

A recent video of Matheesha Pathirana touching MS Dhoni’s feet surfaced on social media
During a conversation on CSK's official YouTube channel, Pathirana expressed his sincere gratitude to Dhoni for helping to advance his career.

The world knows MS Dhoni for his skill in cricket, but his ability to develop young talent is perhaps even more impressive. Among many others, Dhoni has been instrumental in developing a talented pool of Indian cricket players since he took over as captain of the team in 2007. He has helped elevate players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to prominence as batting stars. This development of talent also extends to the IPL, where the Chennai Super Kings have won a record five titles.

But Dhoni’s rich presence in the CSK dressing room has benefited more than just Indian cricket players. In limited-overs formats, Matheesha Pathirana of Sri Lanka is one of the first names in his country’s playing XI, but MS Dhoni was among the first to notice him. In 2022, Pathirana made his official debut for his country at CSK, where he had first announced his arrival in the cricket world.

‘Father figure’

During a conversation on CSK’s official YouTube channel, Pathirana expressed his sincere gratitude to Dhoni for helping to advance his career. Pathirana referred to Dhoni as a father figure in his cricket career.

After my father, in my cricket life, he (Dhoni) plays my father’s role. He takes care of me, and he gives me advice on what I have to do, similar to my father’s thing when I’m at my home. I think that’s enough,” said Pathirana.

Pathirana was a key player in CSK’s victory in the previous IPL season, as the team won a record-tying fifth title thanks to his 19 wickets in 12 games. Pathirana has been outstanding for the team so far this year as well; in six games, the Sri Lankan has claimed 13 wickets and is ranked in the top ten on the Purple Cap list.
