Worrying signs for the Indian cricket team. Players who were on an all-time high after being named in the squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 have produced some shoddy performances. What makes matters worse is that all of these stars will likely start for India on June 5 against Ireland.
After the BCCI named a 19-man squad (including 4 reserves), two IPL 2024 matches have been played. Although a small sample size, their form is a big issue, especially when considering most of these players would fly to the USA after the league stage ends on May 19.
Form, a big issue for India before the T20 World Cup 2024
Seven of the players who’ll be in the playing XI have been in action. Only Jasprit Bumrah has done well, while others have struggled, to say the least. None of the batters crossed the 10-run mark, while the bowlers combined took 4.
Rohit Sharma – 4(5)
Suryakumar Yadav – 10(6)
Hardik Pandya – 0(1) & 2/26
Shivam Dube – 0(1) & 1/14
Ravindra Jadeja – 2(4) & 0/22
Jasprit Bumrah – 0/17
Arshdeep Singh – 1/52
When it comes to their performance throughout the IPL 2024 season, only two of the seven mentioned above have been outstanding. Bumrah is the purple cap holder and, without a doubt, has been the best bowler in the league. Dube falls in the same league; he’s been an incredible middle-over hitter and even rolled his arm for the first time in IPL 2024.
Arshdeep has been among the wickets, but he hasn’t been economical at all. Jadeja and Pandya have combined to take 11 wickets and score 356 runs in 10 matches. Not once have the two all-rounders clicked in both departments and haven’t contributed much to their sides.
Suryakumar and Rohit have been hit-and-miss. They are either going all guns-blazing or fizzling out. All of the players mentioned above will start in India’s playing XI, and only two are in great form. With 21 league-stage matches left, BCCI and Indian management will hope that the big guns come before the T20 World Cup starts.
