Ruturaj Gaikwad is making life difficult for BCCI selectors. The India cricket team’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad could be announced in a couple of days, and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper is making life hard for Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma. But they aren’t the only ones who’ll have trouble with his consistent performances.
Shubman Gill, the next-in-line opener, hasn’t had the best of the IPL 2024 season. Now, when the pressure is already on him, Ruturaj has scored a sumptuous 98-run knock against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Although it missed out on a second consecutive ton, it is more than enough for him to keep him in the hunt.
IPL 2024: Shubman Gill vs Ruturaj Gaikwad
Despite playing one less inning, Gaikwad is easily outscoring his competitor for the reserve opener spot. He scored 127 runs more than Gill, averages nearly 30 more, and is striking at nearly 150. He also has four 50+ scores (1 hundred and 3 fifties) compared to the Gujarat Titans skippers’ two 50+ scores (2 fifties).
Another thing that goes in his favor is his captaincy record. Ruturaj Gaikwad already has an equal amount of wins (4) despite leading his side in two fewer matches. One can make the argument that he has MS Dhoni by his side, but that doesn’t make his success mean anything less.
Ruturaj Gaikwad also keeps consistent pressure on the bowlers better than Shubman Gill. The GT skipper has been striking at 127.34 in the powerplay, while the CSK captain is doing so at 149.63 in the 1-6 overs. This means that Gaikwad continues to strike at a great pace throughout the match, while Gill, despite upping his tempo, is slower than Ruturaj.
