Ever since D Gukesh became the youngster chess player to win the FIDE Candidates in the history of the tournament, he has become the new poster boy of Indian chess, perhaps after Viswanathan Anand. His victory meant, now he has a chance to also become the World Champion, as he will take on China’s Ding Liren for the title later in the year.
The accolades don’t end just here for Gukesh, who will be richer by almost INR 1 crore, including INR 43,00,000 in prize money, and INR 56,00,000 as money for scoring 9 points in the FIDE Candidates.
Downside of Being the Youngest FIDE Candidates Champion
However, there is just a slight downside to Gukesh being the youngest ever champ. In a picture that went viral on Wednesday, the 17-year-old was seen raising a toast with a glass of water, while the others raised glasses of champagne. That was because the legal drinking age in Canada is 18-19, and the Indian youngster isn’t still eligible to have a drink.
