With the Indian team set to play five T20Is in Bangladesh, Asha Shobana Joy views this as an excellent opportunity to prepare for the T20 World Cup later this year.

At 33 years old, leg-spinner Asha Shobana Joy’s cricketing journey is just taking flight. Named in the Indian women’s cricket team for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh, this marks a significant milestone for the Kerala cricketer, who has been waiting for her maiden India call-up for over two decades.

Dream realized through WPL

Asha Shobana Joy’s stellar performance in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), where she emerged as the joint second-highest wicket-taker for champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru with 12 scalps, paved the way for her selection in the national squad.

Reflecting on her selection, Asha Shobana Joy expressed her joy and surprise, acknowledging the selectors, captain, and vice-captain for having faith in her abilities.

I was very happy when I heard the news. After my good show in WPL, I expected to be in the Indian camp. But getting the India call-up was a pleasant surprise. It felt good,” she told TOI.

“At 33, my career is just starting. Age is just a number. Experience really matters when you go into bigger tournaments. All credit to the selectors, captain and vice-captain for having faith in me. It motivates me to work harder. I have been working very hard for the last few years, especially after getting into WPL.”

Age is Just a Number: Asha Shobana Joy

For Asha, age is merely a number, and she sees her selection at 33 as the beginning of an exciting chapter in her career. Despite the long wait for her India call-up, she remains motivated and credits her experience gained over the years for her readiness to shine on the international stage.

From Dreams to Reality

Having started playing professional cricket at the age of 13, Asha’s journey to the national team was filled with challenges and moments of doubt. However, her unwavering belief in herself and her dream of representing her country kept her going.

With Hyderabad being her second home since 2011 because of Railways, Asha’s perseverance and dedication have finally paid off with her selection in the Indian team.
