After taking a break from IPL 2024, RCB all-rounder Glenn Maxwell signs for Washington Freedom in MLC

With six losses Royal Challengers Bengaluru now sit at the bottom of the IPL 2024 table

RCB all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell has penned a deal with the Washington Freedom for the upcoming Major League Cricket (MLC) season in 2024. The 35-year-old took a break from IPL 2024 and withdrew his name from Royal Challenger Bengaluru’s game against Sunrisers Hyderabad citing concerns over his form.

“It’s a tournament that I watched from afar last year and was extremely excited about hopefully playing this tournament one day and luckily enough the timings have aligned this year,” Maxwell said. “I’ve been speaking to Ricky Ponting and a few other players a fair bit over the last little period and certainly extremely excited to get stuck in.

Glenn Maxwell will be joined by Travis Head and Steve Smith at Washington Freedom, forming a formidable trio that is expected to elevate the team’s performance in the MLC. Guided by coach Ricky Ponting and led by Moises Henriques, the team boasts strong leadership. The presence of familiar faces like Head, Smith, and Ponting played a pivotal role in Maxwell’s decision to join Washington Freedom. He views the opportunity to be part of something significant in the MLC as highly appealing and believes in the potential for growth and success within the league.

Why did Glenm Maxwell sit out of RCB vs SRH?

In addressing his recent decision to sit out from Royal Challengers Bengaluru‘s lineup in the IPL, Maxwell clarified that it was not due to a need for an extended break from the tournament. Instead, he simply felt that he was not part of the best XI for the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad and preferred to avoid potentially uncomfortable conversations with the team’s captain and coach by voluntarily stepping aside.

Will he return in KKR vs RCB?

Maxwell is also suffering a “hip strain” and is unlikely to return for his team’s IPL 2024 away game against KKR at Eden Gardens on Sunday. The 35-year-old has only scored 32 runs in six innings, at an average of 5.33.
