Dinesh Karthik in India’s T20 World Cup squad? Irfan Pathan laughs it off, disagrees

As the discussion regarding Dinesh Karthik's inclusion in T20 World Cup squad continues. Irfan Pathan laughs it off

After the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad match, Dinesh Karthik’s inclusion in the T20 World Cup 2024 in India’s squad sprouted up. Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayadu backed Karthik to be included in the squad for the marquee tournament.

He voiced the opinions of innumerable people on social media. In the discussion on Star Sports, he said, “He has always remained in the shadows of MS Dhoni and hence did not get consistent opportunities. Probably, one last time, he could become a match-winner for India, and he would have that golden opportunity to end his career with the World Cup and help India win that trophy. I feel India should take him to the World Cup.”

However, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, part of the panel, laughed it off. He said that the World Cup is different as there is no impact-player rule in it. Pathan added that the pressure in the tournament is different altogether.

Dinesh Karthik for T20 World Cup?

The tournament is slated to start in June, after IPL 2024, and BCCI is on the hunt to select a wicketkeeper in the squad. While Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are the likeliest choices, Dinesh Karthik has entered the competition as well. Pant has scored 194 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 157.73 while Samson has hit 264 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 155.29.

Karthik’s performance in IPL 2024

Dinesh Karthik was the lone hope for RCB in the run feast at the Chinnaswamy Stadium against SRH. His 83-run knock of 35 deliveries went in vain as the team succumbed to their sixth defeat this season. His swashbuckling knock against SRH on Monday is proof of his skill and resilience. Karthik has scored 226 runs in 7 innings with a strike rate of 205.45, which is higher than Pant and Samson.
