Three concerns for India ahead of T20 World Cup squad selection

As the T20 World Cup 2024 draws nearer, selectors have begun the process of preparing the squad for the tournament.

The Indian selectors are closely monitoring the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with keen interest as they finalize India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held for the first time in the US. While India’s squad was nearly set for the major event, recent disappointing displays from key players have raised several concerns for India’s T20 World Cup campaign. Let’s delve into three of these concerns ahead of the T20 World Cup.

3 concerns for T20 World Cup 2024

PlayerRole
Hardik Pandya All-rounder
Suryakumar Yadav Batter
Mohammed Siraj Bowler

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya has not been a reliable player for India in recent years. His recurring injury issues have consistently impacted India’s performance, and now, his on-field contributions are also falling short. Throughout the IPL thus far, he has failed to deliver either with the bat or the ball. Despite being considered as India’s key all-rounder for the T20 World Cup, his current poor form necessitates a reconsideration of his role in the squad.

Team India’s problems with the right combination

The Indian selectors may face a problem of plenty when selecting the Indian squad. However, they must ensure they assemble the right combination. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli anchoring the team as senior players, India needs to inject more firepower into its batting lineup. Additionally, the bowling unit requires right balance of pace and spin.

However, concern arises if Hardik Pandya fails to regain his form, as his absence would disrupt the balance of the playing XI. India need a dependable fast-bowling all-rounder in the team, so Pandya finding his form again is essential for the team’s success.

The IPL would have been the perfect platform for Indian players to prepare for the T20 World Cup. However, the performances of a few star players have left selectors confused. Suryakumar Yadav, for instance, has failed to make an impact so far in the tournament, managing just 52 runs in three matches. Similarly, Yashasvi Jaiswal has also disappointed with his performance.

Furthermore, players whom selectors hadn’t considered seriously have proven themselves worthy of attention, like Yuzvendra Chahal, who currently holds the ‘Purple Cap’.

Mohammed Siraj

Before the start of the IPL tournament, Siraj was in peak form; however, he has failed to maintain it during the tournament. With Mohammed Shami unavailable, Siraj was the chosen replacement for the T20 World Cup squad. However, given his recent performance, selectors must now explore additional options.
