Australia legend Steve Smith signs for Washington Freedom in US Major League Cricket

The second season of MLC kicks off on July 4th, following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. Washington finished third in the inaugural season, and with Smith on board, they'll be aiming to go all the way this year.

Australian batting legend Steve Smith is set to light up the American cricket scene after signing for the Washington Freedom in the second season of Major League Cricket (MLC).

The 34-year-old batter will team up with his former national teammate, coach Ricky Ponting, at the Washington-based franchise. Their reunion comes after the T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the US and the West Indies, where Steve Smith hopes to represent Australia once again.

Growing Aussie Influence in MLC ft Steve Smith

Steve Smith’s signing adds to the growing Australian influence in the American T20 competition. Last year, the six-team tournament, backed by wealthy Indian investors, saw Aussie stars like Marcus Stoinis and Aaron Finch participate alongside international greats.

The Washington Freedom, one of the league’s foundation teams, boasts a strong Australian connection. Smith’s appointment follows his role as a brand ambassador for the team last year. Additionally, his state team, New South Wales, has a high-performance partnership with the Washington franchise.

“Can’t Wait”: Steve Smith

In a video message, Steve Smith expressed his excitement about joining the Freedom. “I’m super excited… I can’t wait to meet all of my new teammates and play in front of some incredible crowds in America,” he declared. He also spoke of his eagerness to work with Ricky Ponting and his coaching staff.

Washington Freedom Aims High with Steve Smith

Steve Smith’s signing is a major coup for the Washington Freedom. His vast experience and batting prowess will significantly boost the team’s credibility as the American league strives to gain a foothold in the US sports market.
