Former Australia Team captain Tim Paine has expressed strong interest in becoming the head coach of the Adelaide Strikers, but only if the role is separated from the South Australian state team head coach position.
Tim Paine’s coaching ambitions
Tim Paine, who recently retired from first-class cricket, is eager to pursue a career in coaching. He served as an assistant coach for the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL 2023 season, where they reached the Challenger Final.
Current Coaching landscape
South Australian cricket is undergoing significant changes this off-season. Long-serving figures like head coach Jason Gillespie and general manager of high performance Tim Nielsen have departed.
Luke Williams, a successful T20 coach, has also stepped down as head coach of the women’s state team, though he remains in charge of the WBBL team and has secured an assistant coach role in the BBL.
One Coach vs. Split Roles: Tim Paine
The current structure sees a single coach overseeing both the South Australian state team and the BBL’s Adelaide Strikers. Paine acknowledges that this combined role wouldn’t be feasible for him at this stage. However, he has a different perspective if the roles were split.
Openness to Apply for Head Coach Position
“If they were to split the roles, I would be very interested certainly in having a crack at getting the job,” Paine told SEN Tassie Breakfast.
He acknowledges the vast experience required for such a position and the competition from other qualified coaches. Nevertheless, he sees this as a valuable learning opportunity and wouldn’t hesitate to apply.
Tim Paine emphasizes his desire to develop his coaching skills. He views a formal application process as a positive step in his professional growth, regardless of the outcome. Ultimately, he aspires to coach at the highest levels possible.
Work-Life Balance for Tim Paine
Paine highlights his family obligations in Tasmania, making a combined state and BBL coaching role unattractive at this point in his career. This situation is similar to other states with a single BBL team, such as Queensland, Tasmania, and Western Australia. The Brisbane Heat, the reigning BBL champions, also require a new coach after Wade Seccombe’s departure.

Uncertain Future for South Australian Cricket
With several key coaching positions vacant, South Australian cricket is at a crossroads. The decision to maintain the combined role or split it into separate state and BBL head coach positions will significantly impact the direction of the teams and potentially open doors for aspiring coaches like Tim Paine.
