Babar Azam picks Naseem Shah over Jasprit Bumrah for crunch time: ‘A rare talent’

With the T20 World Cup just around the corner, Azam's comments spark an interesting debate. While Jasprit Bumrah's experience is undeniable, Naseem Shah's raw talent and recent form make him a player to watch.

Pakistan’s white-ball captain Babar Azam has expressed his confidence in young fast bowler Naseem Shah, even suggesting he might be his pick over the experienced Jasprit Bumrah in a high-pressure T20 situation.

Tough Call: Jasprit Bumrah vs Naseem Shah

During a recent podcast appearance, Babar Azam, fresh off his success as the PSL’s top scorer, faced a hypothetical question: who would he choose to defend 10 runs in the final over of a T20 match – Naseem Shah or India’s ace Jasprit Bumrah? Without hesitation, Azam chose the 20-year-old Shah.

Naseem Shah’s Resilience and Skill

Babar Azam’s reasoning highlighted Shah’s determination and talent. He praised Shah’s swift recovery from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for over six months, missing the 2023 World Cup.

“The way he came back after injury… his skills are exceptional,” Azam said. “We don’t often see talent like this in Pakistan.”

Naseem Shah path to greatness

While acknowledging the experience of Shaheen Afridi, another young Pakistani fast bowler, Azam sees Naseem Shah following a similar path.

“Shaheen is in a class of his own,” Azam explained, “but Naseem is on a similar trajectory, gaining valuable experience.”

Shah’s PSL Performance Underscores Potential

Naseem Shah’s recent performance in the PSL solidified his captain’s faith. Playing for Islamabad United, Shah emerged as a key player, claiming 15 wickets in just 11 innings at a highly impressive economy rate of 7.56. His contribution proved instrumental in leading United to a PSL title victory.
