England’s ICC T20 World Cup defense just got a lot tougher. Ben Stokes‘ decision to prioritize his fitness has left a gaping hole in the team. While finding a player with Stokes’ all-around talent is nearly impossible, England has some strong contenders to fill the void.
Boosting batting firepower
One option is to bolster the already impressive top order. Skipper Jos Buttler and Phil Salt, the world’s No. 2 ranked T20I batsman, seem like sure bets.
Youngster Harry Brook, despite missing cricket this year, is also likely to be included. This could open the door for additional batsmen like Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, or the exciting Will Jacks.
Replacing All-rounder with All-rounder?
While no one can truly replace Stokes, England has some talented all-rounders. Liam Livingstone (ranked 8th) and Moeen Ali (ranked 9th) in the ICC T20I All-Rounder rankings are strong contenders. Sam Curran, the Player of the Tournament in the 2022 World Cup, is another lock for the squad. Chris Jordan, another all-rounder born in Barbados, could be a sentimental choice for the Caribbean leg, especially considering his past contributions.
Spin it to Win?
The Caribbean and US conditions might favor spin bowling, and England has a wealth of options. Adil Rashid, the world’s No. 1 ranked bowler, is a guaranteed pick. Moeen Ali’s flexibility allows him to bowl during the Powerplay and at the death. Livingstone and Jacks can also provide spin options. Could a young talent like leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who impressed against the West Indies last year, be given a chance?
Going All Out with Pace
Jofra Archer, if fit, will lead the pace attack. Reece Topley and Chris Woakes are likely inclusions, along with other bowling all-rounders. England might consider adding even more pace with Mark Wood, who performed well in the last World Cup, or Gus Atkinson, who shone on his T20I debut.

England’s T20 World Cup Squad: Finding right balance
England faces a crucial decision. Do they bolster their batting with another specialist batsman? Do they seek an all-rounder to replicate Stokes’ role, or do they go all-in with their pace attack?
Ultimately, the answer will depend on the conditions and the team’s strategic vision. One thing’s for sure – whoever steps in for Stokes will have some big shoes to fill.
