The BCCI has called for a meeting with the owners of IPL teams on 16th April. Though no main agenda for the meeting is set, however reports claim it might about the IPL retentions for the next mega auction. Some IPL owners believe that the number of retentions should be increased to 8.
There is a disparity between the IPL owners about the number of players that can be retained. While some believe as many as 8 players can be retained, others are of the opinion that, higher retention means lesser players in the auction pool.
The last time IPL retention took place was 2 years back during the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. There will also be discussions about the salary cap for the players. In the IPL 2024 auction, each of the teams were given a salary cap of 100 crore. However, this number is slated to increase in the next auction.
Right to Match Card Back?
IPL 2022 Mega Auction didn’t have the Right to Match card option. But now there are talks about bringing back the option that was used previously. RTM is used when a team releases a player, and some other team picks up the player during the option. The releasing team has the option of matching the current sum to rope in the player into their squad.
However, there is a limit for the RTM option. Previously, it could have been used only on 3 Indians or 2 overseas players.
